We
Get Letters
Dear
Sophie and Mark;
The pup we picked up last July turned one year old this week. You may
recall from past correspondence, below, that we named him Marco Polo. This has turned out
to be very appropriate, for as you’d expect of the breed he is very
curious and has a restless desire to explore everything.
On this, the anniversary of his birth, I write to tell you Marco is everything you promised
he’d be, and everything we’d hoped.
About 40 pounds. Always happy. Welcoming of any and all people and
things, without a trace of any behavioral issues.
He is very smart: In three 8 week puppy classes he always was among the
top performers. He obeys beautifully and dutifully, and pretty
consistently. A month ago one trainer said he was about the best trained/smartest
of his breed she’d ever experienced at 11 months of age.
Marco brings us a lot of joy
and, we’d like to think, we do the same for his life. He gets plenty of
attention and game-playing daily, long walks every day, and often
long runs off leash to flush out mice and birds and other game to
his heart’s content. He loves to swim, fetch, cuddle and eat. (My how he
can inhale dinner or a treat...)
He is also quite beautiful. And in the next day or so I’ll send you by
separate email some pictures of him from last fall, this winter and now.
(I did not want to attach them to this email in case their size prevents
you from opening this email on your computer. So if you can’t open what I
send later, let me know and I will print them out and mail them to you so
you can see visually, once again, what wonderful genes run in your dogs.)
This
note is a thank you from me and my husband for your conscientious
breeding and training of a wonderful companion. We think of you
often with gratitude.
Sincerely
Marsha Lindsay

Started
Dogs & Puppies
Reacher x Wallace due July 15
Pilot x Wallace due later summer
We have many puppies coming up with some getting ready
to go home and some learning the ropes of becoming a nice young started
dog ready for fall. Check out the selection of started dogs and the
upcoming litters if you are contemplating a new addition to your
family. Some of the pups are being
selected now but will not be picked up until later summer. They then
become young started dogs and it is a benefit to both the new owner and
for the dog in that it gets a good introduction into the world of living
with someone, learning to retrieve and learning how to be a dog.
Check the web site for current descriptions and updated
litter information. We have a good selection of young started dogs coming up and
with these litters there should not be a long wait for those of you
waiting to acquire a Pine Shadows puppy.

Gun
Dogs
Spring time coming into summer
is a wonderful time to be out and about enjoying the days. Having gone
through the spring trial circuit with the dogs and the people who come
along with us has renewed a sense of competitiveness yet with a sense of
doing our best, enjoying each day and rejoicing in the placements we get
and still enjoying the trials even without any placements.
As we travel with the dogs we always enjoy the
company, enjoy the results and enjoy the fact that we are able to compete
in the trial game and meet people from all over the United States.
This spring the Northern Minnesota Springer Club has
held a couple fun trials already with a couple more planned for the
summer. At these fun trials we do run the dogs in the 8 field events plus
one of the highlights is the kids’ program that we put on. Joanne is the
coordinator of these events which range from GPS tracking, BB Gun target
shooting, Easter Egg Hunt, and kite flying! The fun trial stakes can
become quite completive especially the hunting dog stake and the shooting
dog stake where the handler does his own shooting.
A relative new Springer owner Tony Cyr with his 5 year
old Springer Pine Shadows Birch
ended up taking first in the hunting dog stake on his first try at
running in the event. Birch held up her part by finding the birds and
Tony was quite proficient with his shotgun downing both birds.
So spring time training is still quite important but
after the trials, after the training sessions, after the ribbons and
awards it is still just a great day to be out and about with your dog.

Timber’s
Tip

TIMBER
The power of the place board.
The new crop of puppies is sure developing into some
fun times for our puppy trainers Joannie and Jill. I get to watch them
work young puppies and go through the step by step process. We have a
couple pups named Nickel and Dime who are from the Spear x Wallace litter. This group Joannie has been walking them outside
to the place board since they have been 5 weeks old and at ten weeks old
I was watching Joannie do a demonstration of how
effective of a training tool this place board has become. This little Dime puppy would run to the place
board, hop up on it and sit and wait for Joannie to get there. Then she would
throw the dummy for Dime and
he would run out, grab the dummy and race back to the board. He was so
happy and just totally enjoyed what he was doing.
This training process of consistency and habit
development is what I enjoy watching as the new crop of pups develops
into productive household members for families.
