Thought you might like to see this, We were in South Dakota last week and I have to tell you Herky did a terrific job. We have things to work on this Spring, but he did exceptionally well for his first time, working with 6 other dogs and areas with concentrated scent, ran his first two wild pheasants down, found two birds that were lost in cat tails and deep brush and retrieved over 10 birds. We have more work to do but this was the best pheasant hunt I have ever had and I thank you for all your help.
Looks like you’re having a great season out there, keep the pictures coming to Facebook.
Thanks Again and have a very Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas.

We just completed the NMESSC fall field trial. What a wonderful weekend of trialing as we had nearly eighty dogs competing in the all-age stakes, fourteen puppies, and four in our youth stake. NMESSC members put on another fine trial with good gunning, fine bird planting, timely shuttle service, delicious foods, blue ribbon hospitality, and a time respecting completion by Sunday Noon.
Thank you to all of our volunteers, judges, gunners, and most of all, our participants. Congratulations to the placements:

In this age of high tech, genetics, and chemistry in agriculture it was refreshing to participate again in some basic weed control. No, I didn’t hoe a beet row; rather we joined a group of folks near Tulare last Thursday to catch flea beetles in a pasture. While the control of Leafy Spurge by modern means continues to be most elusive, the mere capture and release of a bunch of tiny bugs works wonders.
This is our fifth year in this process. Cooperating agencies included the Brown County Extension Office, NRCS, and USDA. With nets we gather the natural enemy of this plant, the flea beetle, and release the catch in stands of spurge around the farm at Daybreak. We have recorded some success with these efforts; however, it is a matter of control as this weed is most difficult to eradicate spreading vegetatively with an extensive root system.

It’s a busy trial schedule this week as Morgan and the crew attend three competitions. This weekend’s field trial is hosted by the Minnesota ESS Club and will be held at 9908 34th Avenue SE, Owatonna. On Thursday and Friday they will be at the St Croix Valley ESS event being held at the same farm.
Next weekend we are home hosting our Northern Minnesota ESS Club trial at the Al Grosland farm, 2990 133rd Street SW, Ellendale, MN. Yes, this is a change of location because Hunts Point is much too snow covered.
About eighty springers will be in competition at each of these trials and I encourage you to come out and watch these dogs in action. Look us up by the red vehicles under our American Flags.

Among the awards given at the recent NMESSC banquet was the 2013 Midwest Interclub High Point Amateur Stakes, earned by Neala owned and handled by JP Martin. The trophy, sponsored by the Northeast Wisconsin Spaniel Club, was presented by NWSC representative Lynn Christen. This beautiful cup is in memory of NWSC members: Emmett Anderson, Corky Jarstad, Fred Neville, Ralph Sheldon, and Vance Van Laanen. It was designed and made by the company in Chicago that does the Oscars.
The trophy is an Antique Silver Cup which is hand spun from solid brass and electroplated silver on a round black base with a dog on top carrying a bird. This is awarded to the dog with the highest points accumulated in the Amateur Stakes in the Midwest Interclub area. Congratulations to Neala and her owner/operator JP!
This marks the third consecutive year a NMESSC club member and dog has earned this award, Ed Zollar and Prez in 2012 and JP and Neala in 2011.

Dear Mark and Sophie :
We had a family with three boys like us visiting this past weekend at the hunting camp. Their boys fell in love with Gwinner. Their parents want to get them a dog. Do you have any really good natured dogs ready to go; meaning little farther along than just started. Would not need to be a high powered hunter. If you have any send me pictures and some info and I will get ya’ll connected.
Attached are a couple of pictures of Chex quail hunting, I was entertaining customers and she performed really well.
Hope all well

The next two litters due at Pine Shadows, LACY and SARA, are both looking like they will have pups. They are both eating well and staying in good shape. LACY is bred to HIGGINS and SARA is bred to REBEL.
Because of the deep snow in the switch grass, Morgan is doing board flushes and yard drills with the trial dogs and working the pups on retrieving and perfecting the delivery to hand. Training dogs is much more than field work. Many important little things can be worked on with the yard drills. Never miss an opportunity to train your dog, - in the house, in the yard, and traveling, any situation when you are with your dog.

Thanks to all who attended the NMESSC Annual meeting and banquet. Almost 40 people came for the awards and wonderful slide show of all the club activities throughout the year. Lynn Peterson is our cameraman and he does a wonderful job putting the slide show together.
This upcoming weekend we are planning a three days training trip to Daybreak. There will not be any training at Pine Shadows this Saturday.
Saturday training will commence again on March 1st at Pine Shadows.
The spring trial circuit will start for Morgan on March 6th with the Northern Colorado cocker trial then on to the Springer trials in Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska.

On Friday we received a note that Pine Shadows Tatum was laid to rest. Tatum lived with Michael and Catherine Blassey. She had come into their household as a young, well-mannered hunting and house dog. Unsure of what to expect from a dog in their household, Michael and Catherine set the rules with which Tatum adjusted to quite nicely.
Never over stepping her bounds, always the polite quite family member she enjoyed a great life of helping Catherine while she worked at home and Michael while he cut wood, walked down the trails, retrieved many ducks from the ponds, numerous grouse in northern Minnesota and countless numbers of roosters hunting with the Pine Shadows Huntsmen in South Dakota.
A great little girl who enlightened the lives of Michael and Catherine. We are very blessed that Tatum was able to bring Michael and Catherine into the Pine Shadows fold.
