Mark & Morgan,

It's been a while since I last spoke with you both, I hope all is well.  I have enjoyed watching the progress at DayBreak as well as the dog and hunt pictures on your website as well as facebook.  I look forward to booking a future hunt there.

Today was Rex and my first time out for the season.  We ended up taking 4 Roosters and 4 Hens.  Rex did wonderful and amazes me more and more each time we head out for a hunt.  He hunts close, checks in often, and has a nose and drive like no other dog I've had before.  He is a perfect addition to our family.

Attached is a picture from mid-hunt.  I thought I'd share it with you both.  Take care and hopefully talk with you soon.

Best Regards,

Adam Simons

July 19, 2013

Hi Mark, I just wanted to drop a quick note for Morgan that Reva completed her last test this weekend to go 5/6 for her Senior Hunt Test title.  She has turned out to be quite the retriever passing some challenging tests with a few of them not having many dogs pass at all.  I included a few pictures with a few of her ribbons and also a few others.  As you can see by the pictures she is no longer the same puppy Lydia and I dropped off with Morgan at 5.5 months old.  The plan is to continue her training through this summer improving her blind running skills, and preparing for this upcoming fall hunting season with the possibility of pursuing her Master Hunt Test Title next summer.  Hopefully I can make a stop in one Saturday before fall comes and do a little training.  Thanks again for helping me get her off to the right start.  Hope all is well with you guys!

Also I believe a few people who purchased puppies out of my Nellie this past winter have contacted Morgan with interest in some training.  Look forward to hearing how they do.

A covey of six chicks were milling around this fence yesterday afternoon near the One-Sixty.  It’s a “sign”!

We are seeing chick coveys all over the property , ages of development  from just walking about to short hop flying to some showing tail feathers. Populations are definitely strong.

Thanks to Pheasants Forever for their habitat work throughout the pheasant and quail ranges of America.

Bill said further,   “ Here's a photo of him up in the mountains.  He ran pretty hard today, so now he's sleeping on his dog bed near the fireplace.

Thanks again for everything, and I hope you're having a nice Memorial Day weekend.”

Several times a year Sophie and Joan take their dog show on the road. They have visited schools, churches, retirement homes, and hospitals.

Last month they brought all ages of springers to this second grade classroom. Children experienced hands-on with  three week  and older puppies and a pair of adult dogs, Pelli and Pilot.

While Joannie illustrates, Sophie explains how puppies develop, stages of learning, and rate of growth.  These kids and the pups all had a delightful afternoon.

NMESSC will move their trial to the Owatonna area, the grounds to be determined early this week. Looking at the Tom Sexter grounds where the St Croix Trial was held two weeks ago.

Due to the snow cover up here and more snow expected plus some melting and icy rain, the grounds would cause hazardous conditions for the dogs causing cut paws, cut forelegs and unsafe conditions for the guns and handlers.  Therefore we will move the trial.

Headquarters hotel will be the Microtel Inn and Suites  150 St. John's Drive, Owatonna, MN 55060  Phone 507-446-0228.  A block of rooms is reserved for the trial. Call by Thursday to reserve one. Same special rates.

Because of this change, we will allow anyone to scratch their entry for a full refund if they so choose.

Any questions call Mark or Sophie at 218 829-4736 or 218 821 1205.

JP Martin had to make a major decision yesterday in sending his little dog Secret to the angels. She was only 8 but quite full of cancer. Secret spent the last two years of her life working with Linda as the main therapy dog in reducing the pain level for Linda and extending Linda's life well past expectations.

Secret was able to follow in the footsteps of her mentor, Kat, learning the phenomenal trade of a therapy dog. Reliving the pain for Linda the past year finally took its toll on Secret.

Please remember JP in your thoughts and prayers. Give him an extra hug each time you see him.

Pine Shadows Daybreak history lesson. Waneta was born about 1794 here in the Elm River Valley. He joined his father in siding with the British against the United States during the War of 1812. After the war, the British rewarded Waneta for his loyalty by presenting him with a captain's commission.

He remained sympathetic to the British until 1820, when an abortive expedition against Fort Snelling resulted in his pledging his total support to the United States.

A dominant chief of the Sioux tribe, Waneta signed a trade treaty with the Americans on 25 July 1825. On 17 August 1825 he signed the first Treaty of Prairie du Chien which fixed the boundaries of Sioux territory.

A wonderful weekend at Pheasant Fest! We are visiting with sporting folks who are brimming with enthusiasm.  Nice to see so many of our springer owners, some going back to the early 80’s!

Morgan’s children were here on Friday. They were in the Bird Dog Parade leading Apples and Higgins, opening the event. See them on stage introduced by our friends Minnesota Bound’s Bill Sherck and Purina’s Bob West.  Deb Schoene and her dog Swing also represented English Springer Spaniels.

Then they each carved and painted a duck decoy, made fishing lures, and other activities in the Children’s Village. Of course, they visited with the many people who asking about our springers.

Working our booth were Turner, Wallace, Gromit, Boston, Misty, Butter, Pelli, Hadley, Pilot, Apples, and Higgins.

Liberty has turned out to be a very nice dog.  She hunts with a purpose but for the most part has been easy to keep in range. I have used her on Grouse, Pheasants, Woodcock, quail and Ducks.  She has been a little timed about picking up live ducks on the water but in every other aspect she is near perfect.

I am hoping with experience she will develop more confidence in this area but if not she is still a good dog.  She has developed confidence in picking up live birds running on the ground so I have hopes for water retrieves of live birds also.

I do a lot of hunting but my favorite is walking a river and hunting ducks and grouse at the same time.  She is an excellent dog for the purpose.

She is a pleasant dog to have in the house and loves people as she should.

Best wishes for the coming year,  Mike”

January 15, 2013Mark & Morgan,

I wanted to touch base with you both to let you know that Rex's and my 1st hunt went phenomenal!  He did excellent and we had a blast.  I can't thank you guys enough for the wonderful job you did with him.  He is truly a wonderful dog around the house and in the field.  He hunts close, is intuitive, and hunts hard.  Seeing as he just turned 1 and that it was our first time out...Ever....I figured it might be a little chaotic and wanted to simply keep things fun.  Within the first 100 yards Rex had raised a hen that the labs he was running with blew right past.  She was in thick cover and had burrowed her way deep into a small thick patch of whips and grass.  I would have walked right past her as well.  Rex got her up and we got her down.  He retrieved to hand and was soft mouthed.  A Perfect 10!

After a couple hours of hunting and birds flushed and shot (and sometimes shot at), he was like a machine.  I don't think his tail ever stopped wagging.  He listened, responded to commands and whistles, and came right back after the "no bird" call.

I wanted to give you guys the report and also share a couple pictures.  Attached is Rex and I with a couple of the day’s roosters as well as one with him holding the bird.

It was a great day guys, he's quite the dog.  We're going out on Friday again, can't wait!

Take Care,

Adam Simons

Thought you might like to see one of your superstars, on the left is Hank whom you shipped to me in '09 on the right is Big Mack his son. they hunt often and together with Hank’s mate Lili and Mack’s sister Ellie. They have hunted pheasant, chukar, quail , huns, woodcock and grouse in NJ, PA, NY State, Vermont and Maine. They have put hundreds of birds in the air for us and can never wait long for the next hunt.

Thank you so much for my "bird finding machines".

The Barn at Daybreak project continues. With much of the downstairs completed we are beginning the Loft.  Closed cell foam insulation was applied last week and the renewal of the fir floor has started this week. Look for walls rising by the end of the month.

Saturday training is up to speed, join us at Brainerd. We are gathering the gear necessary for our Pheasant Fest exhibits, Feb 15-17 in Minneapolis.  If you and/or your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc. wish to hunt pheasants your support is needed by Pheasants Forever.

January 10, 2013

Saturday training has begun in 2013. We had a nice turnout with a busy morning; it was 12:30 or later when we had lunch. Mark, Morgan, and Joannie helped handlers in the field while Sophie lead an obedience class, showed several dogs, and guided a couple of families who were taking their new family members home for the first time. This will be repeated each Saturday until trial season gets going. Come on out. All breeds of gun dogs and handlers are welcome.

Mark your calendars with the date of Pheasant Fest, February 15-17, being conducted at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Pine Shadows will be there with springers all three days.

How did you bring in the New Year?  Morgan and Grant held a chukar hunt for their kids and nephews- the Andres boys on Tuesday afternoon.  All had a great time including all the lucky dogs that were used in the hunt!  Thank you’s to Grandpas Andres and Haglin.

We are looking forward to the first Saturday of winter/spring training. All breeds of gundogs and handlers are welcome to participate and/or observe as we begin around 8:30 every Saturday until the Midwest trial season begins. The hobo fire will be burning; snacks are both available and welcome. Around noon we recap the morning with a pot luck lunch (inside the kennel building).

To All,

I had some spare time this afternoon and went to your website and wanted to say hi and hope all is well at Pine Shadows. We brought Brady home in I believe January 2006 from Pine Shadows. I think you even had his picture on the website. He has been a great dog both in the field and the duck blind and is in good health.

Attached is a photo of our son Travis and Brady with a goose he retrieved on our last waterfowl hunt this season. This goose gave him all he wanted. All the best to everyone and have a safe and happy New Year.
